Federal prosecutors say that there is insufficient evidence to charge the officer following the midday shooting that left 30-year-old Northwest DC resident Turell Delonte Campbell dead the day before Thanksgiving last year.

"The US Attorney’s Office and the MPD Internal Affairs Division conducted a comprehensive review of the incident, which included a review of law enforcement and civilian accounts, crime-camera footage, BWC footage, physical evidence, recorded radio communications, forensic reports, the autopsy report, and reports from MPD," officials said.

According to investigators, at around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, Campbell was spotted by US Park Police officers in the 1100 block of 12th Street NW and it was believed he was involved in drug trafficking in the area.

When the officers approached, Campbell fled onto the 1100 block of M Street, where one was able to catch up to the suspect, attempted to grab him, and a brief struggle ensued.

The suspect grabbed a gun from his pocket and shot the officer, who returned fire and struck him. Campbell was able to run a few more feet before collapsing.

He were treated and declared dead by first responders while the officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition and later released. Campbell's gun was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

"After a careful, thorough, and independent review of the evidence, federal prosecutors found insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the Park Police officer willfully violated the civilian’s rights," investigators said.
